How to Give Your Dog the Best Life in Sudden Valley

One common thread between all of us is that we all would like the best for our friends and family. We want them to thrive, to have fun, to enjoy themselves and to feel loved. That feeling extends to our four-legged, fur-covered friends and family members that just so happen to be of the canine variety. We want our fur babies to have the best lives they possibly can and for them to know that we care. 

So what’s one of the best ways to give them the life they deserve? Well, it’s to live somewhere where they can enjoy themselves, exploring and sniffing to their heart’s content. Somewhere they can run freely at local dog parks, socializing with their fellow quadrupeds, tripods, or wheel assisted friends. Somewhere they can get their enrichment in both forested and lakeside settings, surrounded by birds, rabbits, squirrels, and deer that keep them entertained. Somewhere they can get their hair and nails done and feel like royalty. Where is this magical place, you ask? It just so happens to be Sudden Valley.

Here’s how you can give your dog the best life by living in Sudden Valley. 

Take Advantage of the Local Dog Parks

Sudden Valley has safe places for your pups to get their zoomies out with two dog parks! The Sudden Valley Marina provides the largest area for them to run and socialize. The space is soon to be fenced in, there’s plenty of parking if you need to commute to get there, AND your pup has a beach of their own to get their doggy paddle on. 

For the little fellas that don’t want to get chased by a dog three times their size, you and your pup can head down to the dog park specifically for small dogs that is located by the tennis courts in Gate 2. There is parking by the golf course and baseball fields or on the far side of the barns. This area is smaller than the marina, but is fenced in and usually has a bucket of tennis balls to play with. 

Outside of Sudden Valley there are several dog parks and offleash areas in Bellingham. Some of our favorites are the dog park at Lake Padden, the off leash area with lake access at Bloedel Donovan Park, the off leash trails at Whatcom Falls, and the off leash area in Little Squalicum Park by the waterfront.  

Explore the Trail Systems

Not every dog wants to be social, and that’s both ok and relatable. It’s nice to break away from the masses and to be free to do your own thing. Thankfully, living in Sudden Valley provides this opportunity as well with a couple trails for you and your dog to check out. 

First is the walking trail around Lake Louise. This dog-friendly trail is 1.25 miles of relatively flat graveled pathway that has free bags for when your buddy needs to do their business and garbage cans to dispose of full bags. You can park at the Sudden Valley Visitor Center to get started on your walk. Along the way you may see other dogs as this trail is frequented by community members, but you’ll also see ducks, beavers, rabbits, all kinds of birds, and deer, making this one a great lap to do when your dog needs to get their sniff on. Along the way, stop at one of the many spots to swim and cool off!

If you want to get into the woods, we recommend heading to the Lookout Mountain Preserve on Lake Louise Road across from Sudden Valley’s Gate 9 entrance. The trails start in the parking lot and head uphill, providing quick exercise for both you and your furry friend. This is an on-leash zone, so be sure to stay connected with your buddy. Lookout Mountain has miles of trails that wind through the hills, pass waterfalls, and cross cute creeks via even cuter bridges, so your dog will have plenty of opportunities to drink fresh, moving water. This trail system is shared use, so be on alert if your dog happens to be spooked easily by bicycles. 

Be Pampered at the Pet Salon

Now that play time has been taken care of, pamper your pup with an appointment at the Skinny Dippers Pet Salon. Their “menu” is quite extensive and includes nail trimming, hair cuts, baths, and more. This crew is open daily at their location by Tino’s Pizza and the Valley Market and is always ready to get your dog feeling squeaky clean. Oh, and if you happen to have cats they can take care of them too!

Voyage Through the Neighborhood

Unfortunately for our furry friends, there isn’t always enough time in the day to get to their favorite parks, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get them out for the walk they deserve. When you live in Sudden Valley, every road is relatively safe to walk along with some sort of shoulder to put distance between you passing cars, and drivers are aware of their fellow community members and large speed bumps help them stick to the posted speeds. There are also 20+ parks scattered throughout the neighborhood where you and your dog can hang out, and, if you keep an eye out for them, you’ll spot the random trails that snake through the woods between streets.
