The Ultimate Spring & Summer Guide to the Pacific Northwest
Ah, summer in the Pacific Northwest. That magical time when the sun shows up (finally!), the trails dry out, the lake floats inflate, and the whole region seems to come alive with adventure. If you’ve ever spent a warm-weather season here in Whatcom County, you know there’s nothing quite like it. And if you haven’t? You’re in for a treat.
We’re your local real estate team here in Bellingham, and yes, we love helping people find homes, but we also love helping you fall in love with life here. So if you’re new to town, visiting, or just craving a little local inspiration, we’ve rounded up our favorite ways to soak up the warm weather months in the Pacific Northwest.
Here is your ultimate PNW Spring & Summer bucket list:
1. Hit the Trails (Snacks Highly Recommended)
There’s nothing like a good hike to kick off your PNW summer. Wildflowers are popping, snow is melting, and the views? Unreal.
Some of our favorite local hikes:
- Oyster Dome – A local classic with big views of the islands and Salish Sea.
- Fragrance Lake – Easy-ish hike, ferny forests, and a peaceful spot to snack by the water.
- Chain Lakes Loop (Mount Baker) – High alpine vibes, turquoise lakes, and “is this real life?” moments all around.
Want to impress your hiking buddy? Pack a breakfast burrito (Sudden Valley Market, anyone?) and hit the trail early. Sunrise from the ridge? Pure magic.
2. Lake Days Are the Best Days
Summer in Whatcom County basically revolves around the water, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Some of our favorites:
- Lake Whatcom – Perfect for paddleboarding, jet-skiing, or just chilling on a floatie.
- Lake Padden – Quieter, family-friendly, and surrounded by shady trails.
- Bellingham Bay – Rent a kayak, try a sunset sail, or watch the waterfront from Boulevard Park.
If you’re new in town and wondering where the locals go when it’s 85 and sunny, the water is a go-to.
3. Farmers Markets
There’s something about a sunny Saturday morning at the farmers market that just feels like summer. Local berries. Live music. People with baguettes sticking out of tote bags. Pure PNW joy.
Don’t miss:
- Bellingham Farmers Market – Every Saturday downtown. Produce, pastries, flowers, and good vibes.
- Ferndale & Lynden Markets – Smaller, slower, and full of small-town charm.
Grab a cold brew, pick up a homemade pie, and wander.

4. Pedal Around Town (or Down a Mountain)
Whether you're a full-on mountain biker or just like cruising in the sun, Bellingham’s got biking options for every kind of rider.
Where to roll:
- Galbraith Mountain – World-class mountain biking. Seriously, people travel here just to ride it.
- Interurban Trail – Chill, coastal, and great for spotting eagles and sailboats.
- Lake Whatcom Trail – Flat, breezy, and perfect for a post-work cruise.
Bonus: There are tons of local bike shops that rent gear and help you find the right trail! You don’t need to be a pro to join the fun.
5. Summer Events Worth Marking Your Calendar For
When the weather heats up, the calendar fills up, and we’re here for all of it. Think live music, parades, seafood fests, and street parties that bring the whole community out!
Our favorite local events:
- Ski to Sea (Memorial Day Weekend) – A crazy-fun race that goes from mountain to sea, followed by an epic downtown party.
- Northwest Tune-up Festival (July) – Bikes, music, beer, what more do you need for a perfect summer fest?
- Downtown Sounds (July–August) – Free concerts, dancing in the streets, and tons of awesome local vendors.
- Bellingham SeaFeast (September) – Boat tours, oysters, maritime heritage, and your new favorite seafood dish.
- Lynden’s Farmers Day Parade – Tractors, cowbells, and small-town nostalgia in the best way.
Trust us: These events are the heart and soul of summer around here!

6. Camp Under the Stars (or Rent a Cute Cabin)
Summer is the season to get outside and stay there. Whether you’re pitching a tent, parking your van, or glamping with a little Wi-Fi, we’ve got the spots.
Top camping picks:
- Silver Lake Park – Camp, swim, fish, repeat.
- Bay View State Park – Water views, beach walks, and a peaceful vibe.
- Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest – More rugged and remote, but worth every mile.
And if roughing it isn’t your thing? Cozy cabins and cute Airbnbs are everywhere up here!
7. Beach Days + Sunset Chasing
You don’t need a big plan to have a perfect PNW summer day. Grab a blanket, pack some snacks, and head to the beach.
Chill beach spots we love:
- AM/PM Beach & the Sudden Valley Marina – Always an amazing spot for a sunset and an off-leash dog park for your furry friends!
- Locust Beach – Huge at low tide, great for beachcombing and kite surfing.
- Marine Park – Super relaxing with a front-row seat to trainspotting and bay breezes.
- Larrabee State Park – Rocky beaches, tidepools, and the kind of sunsets you’ll take a hundred pictures of.
Pro tip: Bring a hoodie. Even warm nights here can get a little crisp once the sun dips.
8. Take a Summer Road Trip
Living in Bellingham means you’re surrounded by epic weekend getaways. Mountains, islands, charming towns… just pick a direction and go!
Road trip faves:
- San Juan Islands – Ride the ferry, eat fresh seafood, maybe even see some orcas.
- North Cascades National Park – Waterfalls, alpine lakes, and zero cell service (in a good way).
- Winthrop, WA – Cute Old West town with riverside trails and great local food.
Sometimes the best way to appreciate home is to leave for a minute… then come back to Bellingham and remember why you love it.

Thinking About Calling This Place Home?

Whether you’re dreaming of a lakefront cabin, a downtown loft close to all the fun, or a backyard big enough for garden parties and hammock naps, we’d love to help you find your home.
