Access Your Favorite Activities From Right Outside Your Front Door In Sudden Valley

So you’re working with the best real estate team in Bellingham (that’s us by the way 😉) and we say, “Have you considered buying in Sudden Valley?” Your initial response will either be, “Yes! I love Sudden Valley” or “Not yet, can you tell me about it?. What is life like in Sudden Valley?”

We love answering this question, not only because we’re long-time residents of Sudden Valley and consider ourselves experts on the neighborhood, but because we love where we live and enjoy sharing it with others. There’s nothing better than experiencing something that you truly love and being able to give that same experience to others. So when our clients ask us what life is like in Sudden Valley and what they can do when they live here, we tell them and we don’t hold back.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you’ll be able to do within a short jaunt from your front door when you live in Sudden Valley.

Mountain Bike To The Trailhead From Your Home In Sudden Valley

Recreation

Let’s start with what you can do for fun. Raise your hand if you consider yourself to be an active person. Perfect, there’s a lot of you. Sudden Valley is a great spot to live if you like to get out and move your body and you’ll be able to do almost every sport imaginable. Let’s dive in.

Mountain Biking

It’s no secret that the Bellingham area is one of the world’s best mountain bike towns. Thanks to the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition  we have world class riding and publicly maintained trails in six different zones around town, two of which you can ride right from home. Both Galbraith and Lookout Mountain can be accessed by climbing from the Lookout Mountain Preserve parking lot on Lake Louise Road, which is less than three miles from any home in Sudden Valley. Don’t feel like riding to the trailhead? No worries, it’s only a few minutes away by car.

Running

Running is a fantastic sport because it can really be done anywhere. Lace up your shoes, do your warm up routine, step out the front door and away you go. But not every neighborhood makes for safe running. Here in Sudden Valley all of our roads feel like side roads and our trails are nice and wide and meander through the woods. Lookout Mountain, the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve, and Lake Louise offer great opportunities to run amongst nature. Whether you want to stick to concrete or like being in the woods, Sudden Valley is a great place to run and explore your surroundings.

Go Boating Or Launch A Personal Vessel From The Sudden Valley Marina

Watersports

Every home in Sudden Valley is within 10 minutes of the Sudden Valley Marina and Lake Whatcom. From the marina you can launch your boat, paddle board, kayak, canoe, foil, kiteboard, or whichever watercraft you so choose. There are also slips available for rent for more permanent storage!

Lake Whatcom is 11 miles long and consists of 3 distinct basins and several different zones that all have varying water and windy characteristics. If you’re looking to tow some tubers through choppy water or want glassy conditions for your paddle you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for. If lounging on the shore is more your style, the marina has plenty of space to put down a towel and there is always AM/PM Beach in Gate 2 as well.

Court Sports

Grab your preferred style of racquet or basketball and let’s hit the courts! At the barns in Gate 2 you’ll find three freshly refinished tennis courts that are also lined for pickleball. At the marina there are two tennis courts, one designated pickleball court and a basketball court! Take your pick of places to play and enjoy! There are even clubs that meet weekly to play! Pickleball Club meets on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and Tennis Club meets every Wednesday.

Field Sports

Sudden Valley has plenty of grass fields tucked amongst the trees, but the most accessible field to play in is by the Gate 2 parking lot. This field is big, and flat, enough for several soccer teams to hold practice, to play a game of baseball, tee ball, or kick ball, to set up a volleyball net, or to host an impromptu tournament of smash ball. There are two quality soccer goals on site and even a backdrop for bat and ball games. There’s plenty of parking for everyone, so bring your crew and play some games!

Hiking

There aren’t alpine trails in Sudden Valley, but lowland hiking is just as enjoyable! There are several miles of trails that cover several thousand feet of elevation within arm’s reach of Sudden Valley. With unobstructed views of Bellingham, cascading waterfalls, and the occasional river otter in Geneva Pond, our local hiking trails have it all.

We’d recommend checking out Lookout Mountain if you want to cover some serious vertical ground and see waterfalls or a view over Bellingham Bay from the summit. If you want to see some ponds and older trees, check out the Stimpson Family Nature Preserve. If you want to walk a flatter trail and watch the ducks, head down to Lake Louise in Gate 2. You can also hike on Galbraith Mountain by starting at the Lookout parking lot or by hiking up the logging road across from Gate 13, but keep in mind Galbraith has a lot of mountain bike trails with very fast users that can’t stop on a dime.

Disc Golf

With all of the underbrush, it’s almost impossible to throw a “worm burner” on our local course. The Mossy Roc Disc Golf Course is in the location of the old Sudden Valley Campground, just down Lake Louise Road from Gate 13 as you drive toward Geneva. It’s managed by the Whatcom Disc Golf Club and is a “members only” course with 17 holes through moss covered trees. Membership can be obtained with an initial $40 payment for annual access, or $20 for six months.

Sudden Valley Residents Can Swim at Two Pools and Three Beaches in the Neighborhood

Swimming

Whether you’re a “pool only” swimmer or enjoy jumping into the varying conditions of local lakes, there’s a body of water in Sudden Valley with your name on it. Sudden Valley members have access to two different pools, both of which are near the barns in Gate 2, and 5 different access points on Lake Whatcom. The larger of the two pools can hold 125 people, but numbers vary based on the number of lifeguards present at any given time. The smaller pool, the Quiet Pool, is behind the former Adult’s Center (now the public library) and allows for 25 adults and 5 children at any given time. There are no lifeguards on duty at this pool. If swimming in the lake is what you’d prefer, check out the previously mentioned Sudden Valley Marina, AM/PM Beach, or Sofield Park.

Yoga

Are you a well-practiced yogi? Looking for a new studio? Or maybe you’ve never stretched and figured now was a good time to start? Perfect! We have just the right studio for you! Located in the Valley Shopping Mall is Sudden Valley Yoga, a studio led by an instructor with over 38 years of experience. Their classes all include posture, breath work, relaxation, and meditation that will help you start the day in a positive light.

The Sudden Valley Golf Course Is Open To The Public And Has Membership Options

Golf

Hit the links! The Sudden Valley Golf Course is an 18 hole masterpiece. The front nine consists of flat holes with lake views and the fifth green even juts out into Lake Whatcom. The back nine winds its way through the trees and residential homes, and its elevation changes present a unique challenge. Thanks to our moderate weather, the course is playable nearly all year round with the exception of the occasional closure due to rain/snow storms. Sudden Valley residents get discounted membership, so be sure to take advantage of the pricing opportunity, or at least grab a bucket of balls and hit the driving range.

Fishing

Anglers get your bait ready! Cast your lines from the shores or dock of Lake Louise and fish alongside Kingfishers and Bellingham’s new official bird, the Great Blue Heron. Or hop on a boat and head out in the early morning hours to get glassy water on Lake Whatcom and see if you can land a bass or a resident Kokanee Salmon.

Be In Nature

When in doubt, just go exist outside. Your future home in Sudden Valley is surrounded by beautiful nature that will quickly brighten your day and remind you why you chose to live here. Go find a field to lie down in, or a tree to rest against, and slow down for a while. Listen to the birds chirping in the trees and watch the baby squirrels chase each other. Take full advantage of living in the woods and enjoy your personal Discover Channel nature show.

Amenities

Not everything about Sudden Valley is fun and games. Let’s chat about the amenities and businesses in Sudden Valley that make your life easier.

Gym

Did you know Sudden Valley has a gym for residents? The Fitness Center is located inside the barns in Gate 2, and has free weights, cardio equipment, dumbbells, and strength training machines. It’s also located right next to the larger of the two pools, so hit the gym, shower off, and then go swim some laps!

Do Your Shopping At The Valley Market Or Buy Food From The Deli

The Valley Market

There’s nothing worse than looking in the fridge and realizing you don’t have anything to eat, or that you don’t want to eat anything that you have. Fear not, the Valley Market is here to help you bridge the gap between grocery runs. They have all sorts of snacks, canned foods, fresh items, drinks, chips and other non-perishables that are either ready to eat or can help add to your recipe.

Don’t want to make anything at home? Order up a sandwich or grab some of the biggest chicken strips you’ve ever seen from the deli counter and your meal is covered! They also have a massive candy aisle and a beer cave if you’re looking for treats and an aisle of over-the-counter pharmaceutical items for when you’re feeling ill and don’t want to run into town.

Restaurants

Besides the great options at the Valley Market, there are two other restaurants in Sudden Valley! The first and longest tenured is Tino’s Pizza & Pasta and it’s located in the Valley Shopping Mall. Their pizza is delicious and you can smell their bread baking from the far side of Lake Louise. Runners beware, the smell of Tino’s will have you drooling and wishing you weren’t half way through your mileage. The second restaurant is El Agave, a purveyor of delicious, and massive, burritos and other Mexican food. El Agave is located in the golf course clubhouse above the pro shop and has two large decks for eating outside. Both restaurants offer takeout and Tino’s will deliver anywhere in Sudden Valley if you don’t feel like leaving the couch.

The South Whatcom Library In Sudden Valley Has Books For All Ages, Abilities, And Interests

Library

Book lovers rejoice! You don’t need to drive into town to find your next read. Simply drive down to the former adult center in Gate 2 (by the barns) and walk through the beautiful gardens of the South Whatcom Library. The staff is incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable, and will be able to point you in your preferred direction. The library is deceptively large and has sections for young children, teens, and everyone else. They also have computers available for anyone that needs access to the basic programs and the internet.

Dog Park

Let your dog unleash those zoomies at one of the local dog parks or offleash areas. The Sudden Valley Marina is home to the largest dog park and will eventually be a fenced area. At this location dogs can run in the field or jump into the lake to go for a swim. The second dog park is for smaller pups and is located by the tennis courts in Gate 2. It’s fully fenced and often has a pile of tennis balls available for anyone to play with. For off leash walks, head to the defunct air strip off of Lake Whatcom Boulevard near the 15th hole of the golf course.

Community Garden

If you love to garden but your yard doesn’t get proper sunlight, or you're looking to supplement your kitchen with fresh vegetables or herbs, we’d recommend seeing if you can get a plot in one of the neighborhood's two community gardens. One of the gardens is located across the parking lot from the library and the other is just outside of Area Z, the home of Sudden Valley’s maintenance staff. The bridge to Area Z was just replaced, making access to the garden even easier. Both gardens are surrounded by tall fencing that keeps them protected from rabbits and curious deer.

There Are 20 Parks In Sudden Valley, Five Of Which Have Playgrounds

Playgrounds

You don’t have to go far to find a playground for your young ones in Sudden Valley. There are 20 parks throughout the neighborhood, five of which have well maintained playgrounds with swings, slides, jungle gyms, and all sorts of climbable structures to keep your kids entertained and to fuel their imaginations. Playgrounds can be found at the barns in Gate 2, just inside Gate 5’s entrance, and at Huckleberry, Cascade, and Maple Leaf Park.

Like anywhere, life in Sudden Valley is what you make it, but unlike many places, Sudden Valley provides opportunities for its residents to live life to the fullest.
